Mendis replaces Asalanka as Sri Lanka's T20I captain for Pakistan tour

Dushmantha Chameera is included subject to fitness as the 15-player squad prepares to leave for Pakistan on October 4, ahead of three T20Is in Rawalpindi this month.

Sri Lanka Cricket's Selection Committee has named Kusal Mendis as captain of a 15-player T20I squad for a three-match series against Pakistan in Rawalpindi this month, replacing Charith Asalanka.

The Selection Committee said the squad will depart for Pakistan on Sunday, October 4, five days before the first match.

Mendis takes over the Twenty20 International captaincy from Asalanka, who had been leading Sri Lanka in the format. Asalanka was left out of the 15-player squad altogether, according to the list released by the Selection Committee.

Dushmantha Chameera's inclusion in the squad is subject to fitness, the Selection Committee said, meaning his place depends on being passed fit before the tour.

Dasun Shanaka, who has previously captained Sri Lanka's white-ball side, is included in the squad as a player rather than as captain.

The remaining 12 players named in the squad are Kamil Mishara, Sineth Jayawardena, Lahiru Udara, Sahan Arachchige, Kamindu Mendis, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Binura Fernando, Nuwan Thushara and Eshan Malinga.

The squad announcement was confirmed separately by the International Cricket Council.

The first T20I will be played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday, October 9, with the second and third matches following on Sunday, October 11, and Tuesday, October 13.
