Kusal Mendis's unbeaten 87 sinks Pakistan in dead-rubber finale

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis struck an unbeaten 87 and shared an unbroken 98-run stand with Kamindu Mendis as Sri Lanka completed an eight-wicket win, in a series Pakistan had already won 2-1.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by eight wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, with captain Kusal Mendis unbeaten on 87 guiding the chase in a dead-rubber match.

Pakistan had already won the three-match series 2-1, having taken the first two matches at the same venue, on October 9 and October 11.

Batting first, Pakistan posted 168 for 8 from their 20 overs at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Pakistan captain Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with 76 off 47 balls.

Needing 169 to win, Sri Lanka made light work of the target. They reached 172 for 2 in 17.1 overs, winning with 17 balls to spare.

Mendis anchored the chase and was still at the crease at the finish, unbeaten on 87.

He shared an unbroken 98-run partnership for the third wicket with Kamindu Mendis, who finished unbeaten on 40. The pair took Sri Lanka from the fall of the second wicket through to victory without further loss.

Kusal Mendis was named player of the match for his innings.

Farhan's 76 took his series tally to 238 runs from the three matches. He was named player of the series, with the ICC crediting the aggregate as a series run-scoring record.

Sri Lanka's win in the final match avoided a series whitewash, but did not change the result. Pakistan won the three-match series 2-1.
