St Kilda Football Club has completed a trade for Brisbane Lions premiership midfielder Sam Marshall, sending the club's 2027 first-round draft selection to Brisbane in a deal announced on Friday, October 9.

Marshall arrives at RSEA Park along with pick 41 in this year's AFL National Draft as part of the trade.

The 20-year-old was born in Buderim, Queensland, and came through the Brisbane Lions Academy before being taken with pick 25 in the 2024 AFL draft. He spent part of his junior career in Melbourne, boarding at Melbourne Grammar School while playing for the Sandringham Dragons.

Marshall made his AFL debut in round six, 2025, against Collingwood at the Gabba and went on to play 11 games in his debut season, including in Brisbane's 2025 premiership win. He added two more senior appearances this year while averaging 25 disposals per game at VFL level.

The Brisbane Lions confirmed Marshall had requested a trade to St Kilda, saying he had been weighing up interest from Essendon and the Saints as well as the possibility of staying at the club.

St Kilda General Manager of Football Lenny Hayes said the club was thrilled to add the midfielder to its emerging core through the middle of the ground.

"While still early in his career, Sam has already shown exciting potential through the midfield in a strong Brisbane side," Hayes said.

"He's a classy young player with a strong work rate and plenty of upside."

"We look forward to welcoming Sam to the Saints and seeing what he can bring to our side next season," Hayes said.

Hayes played 297 games for St Kilda between 1999 and 2014 and was appointed the club's General Manager of Football ahead of the 2026 season, working closely with senior coach Ross Lyon.

Marshall is expected to link up with his new teammates at Moorabbin as St Kilda begins preparations for next season.
