The South East Melbourne Phoenix beat the Illawarra Hawks by 17 points at John Cain Arena on Sunday, returning to the winner's list after a three-game losing run, according to the NBL.

The result came in front of the Phoenix's home crowd in Melbourne, in a match the NBL's own report headlined "Phoenix soar to win over Hawks".

South East Melbourne opened its NBL27 season with a win over Perth before dropping three straight. Sunday's win against Illawarra broke that run.

The Hawks had started their season with a win over Adelaide, the previous season's runners-up, before travelling to Melbourne for the fixture.

Illawarra was left to count its first loss of the NBL27 season.
