Lachlan Shaw will captain the NSW Blues' first-class team for the first time this week, leading the side against Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield match starting Monday at the WACA.
Shaw steps in for regular Shield captain Nic Maddinson, who remains in South Africa with the Australian Test squad. The 23-year-old will become the Blues' 124th first-class captain.
Shaw led NSW to consecutive victories in the One-Day Cup last month. He rejoins the Blues after returning from the Australia A tour of India, along with teammates Sam Konstas, Josh Philippe, Liam Hatcher, Tanveer Sangha and Ben Dwarshuis.
Brock Fitton, Reiley Mark, Bryce Jackson, Charlie Stobo and Riley Kingsell have dropped out of the squad for this match.
If selected, all-rounder Jack Edwards will play his 50th Sheffield Shield match this week.
Shaw is a wicketkeeper-batter from Sydney who made his first-class debut for New South Wales against South Australia in November 2024. He has also played for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
Maddinson and Shaw were named to lead the Blues for the 2026-27 season in September, with Maddinson taking the Sheffield Shield captaincy and Shaw the One-Day Cup leadership. The pair replaced Edwards, who stepped back from captaincy duties under new head coach Brad Haddin to focus on his own performance and manage his workload.
The NSW squad for the match against Western Australia is Shaw (captain), Sean Abbott, Oliver Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Liam Hatcher, Ryan Hicks, Sam Konstas, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe, Will Salzmann, Tanveer Sangha and Jake Scott.
The match begins at 1.30pm AEDT on Monday (10.30am local time) and runs through to Thursday, October 22. Australian fans can watch the action on cricket.com.au and Kayo Sports.
