Daly Cherry-Evans kicked the match-winning field goal in what is reported as his final NRL game as the Sydney Roosters beat the Newcastle Knights 19-18 in the 2026 NRL Grand Final at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Sunday.

Cherry-Evans's field goal came in the 70th minute from 18 metres out. It was the 32nd field goal of his career and put the Roosters ahead for good.

The win was the Roosters' first premiership since 2019 and their 16th title overall. A crowd of 80,814 attended the match.

Newcastle led 12-0 early in the game before the Roosters fought their way back into contention.

Mark Nawaqanitawase scored twice for Sydney. His first try came before half-time, and the second came with about 20 minutes left to play, as the Roosters closed the gap on the Knights.

Newcastle still had a late chance to win it. Greg Marzhew scored a try with around three minutes remaining, and Sandon Smith converted from the sideline to narrow the margin to the final score of 19-18.

James Tedesco was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for best on ground. His contribution in the closing stages included key kick returns and receptions that helped the Roosters see out the result after Marzhew's try.

Kalyn Ponga was also singled out for a strong performance for Newcastle.

Cherry-Evans's field goal turned out to be the last act of his NRL career, with the match reported as his final game in the competition.
