Cricket Victoria chair Shaun Richardson officially switched on the new light towers at Junction Oval on Friday, September 25, in a ceremony attended by players, officials and supporters.
The switch-on preceded the Dean Jones Cup, a match between Victoria and New South Wales named in honour of the late Victorian and Australian batter Dean Jones.
Players and officials watched as the ground was lit for the first time, with Cricket Victoria describing the towers as a major upgrade for the venue.
The organisation said the new lighting would improve training conditions, allow more flexible match scheduling and increase community access to the ground.
Junction Oval has long served as a base for Victorian cricket, hosting Premier Cricket, Sheffield Shield fixtures and state training squads.
The Dean Jones Cup was chosen as the first match to be played under the new lights, a deliberate link between the ground's redevelopment and the legacy of Jones, who played more than 50 Tests for Australia and was a Victorian captain.
Cricket Victoria has not yet released details of the match result.
The venue is expected to host further day-night fixtures under the new towers in the coming Premier Cricket and Sheffield Shield seasons.
