Kim Birrell, 28, won her first WTA Tour singles title at the Korea Open in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday, beating fellow Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
Birrell said on court after the match, to Joint: "It was quite difficult for us today because we are very good friends."
The Korea Open is a WTA 250 event. Sunday's match was the first all-Australian women's singles final on the WTA tour since 2017.
It was also the first meeting between Birrell and Joint on the WTA tour.
The win lifts Birrell into the world's top 50 for the first time in her career.
Birrell had reached two WTA finals before Sunday without winning, losing in Osaka in 2024 and in Chennai in 2025.
Despite claiming the title, Birrell lost her ranking as Australia's number one woman. Talia Gibson finished runner-up at the Singapore Open on the same day.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez beat Gibson 7-5, 6-0 in that final.
