South Africa declared their first innings on 9-425 on the third day of the second Test against Australia at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday, after recovering from 6-110.

Captain Temba Bavuma made 179, his highest Test score, batting across the rain-affected first two days and into day three. He was last out, edging a delivery from Australian paceman Mitchell Starc immediately before the declaration.

Bavuma put on 132 for the seventh wicket with all-rounder Marco Jansen. Jansen scored 85 off 100 balls, with nine fours and three sixes, before he was dismissed by Scott Boland.

Bavuma then added 182 for the eighth wicket with off-spinner Simon Harmer, a South African Test record for that wicket. Harmer made 82, his highest Test score.

Boland finished with five wickets in the innings, his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Australia left out spinner Nathan Lyon for the Test, fielding an all-seam bowling attack.

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0, having won the first Test in Durban by 214 runs.

The third and final Test is scheduled at Newlands in Cape Town, from October 27 to 31.
